At Floreon, we continually strive to demonstrate the performance and reliability of our innovative biopolymer materials through rigorous testing. We’re proud to share that Floreon® Therma-Tech has successfully passed the Ball Indentation test in accordance with IEC 61558-1, this test is a key indicator of thermal resistance and mechanical integrity in demanding electrical and thermal environments.
What is the Ball Indentation Test?
The Ball Indentation test is a standardised method used to assess the heat resistance of insulating materials, particularly those used in transformers and other electrical equipment. Conducted at 125°C, the test measures the diameter of the indentation made by a steel ball pressed into the material under a defined load for a set period. To pass the IEC 61558-1 requirement, the indentation must not exceed 2.00 mm in diameter.
Floreon’s Test Results
Floreon® Therma-Tech samples, moulded & conditioned under 3 different methods were tested by Impact Solutions, an accredited UK-based materials testing lab:
Material | Result |
Amorphous samples, mould temperature left at ambient ~25°C during injection moulding | FAIL (2.17 mm average indentation) |
Samples moulded amorphous, then post-annealed at 95°C | FAIL (2.24 mm average indentation) |
Crystalline samples, mould temperature maintained at 90–95°C during injection moulding | PASS (1.34 mm average indentation) |
Floreon® Therma-Tech crystalline samples met the stringent requirements, demonstrating superior thermal resistance and mechanical performance under pressure.
Why It Matters
Passing the Ball Indentation test under IEC 61558-1 confirms that Floreon® Therma-Tech is a viable material for high-temperature electrical applications. . This not only strengthens our position in the bioplastics market but also opens many opportunities in electronics and appliance manufacturing that require enhanced heat performance without compromising on sustainability.
Looking Ahead
This success reinforces our commitment to delivering high-performance, sustainable alternatives to traditional fossil-based plastics. Floreon Therma-Tech continues to prove that environmentally responsible materials can meet and even exceed industry standards.
